Township government plays a critical role in the future development of a community. The Township Board and staff is made up of individuals who have worked together to develop and implement decisions in the best interest of the people. By working as a team, Comstock Township is able to encourage residential, retail, commercial and industrial growth, thereby providing a more diverse and robust tax base. This in itself improves the economic vitality of our community.

An increased revenue stream will allow the Township to better serve all individuals and businesses by developing and delivering enhanced services. We have all benefited from a more effective and efficient use of tax revenue which enabled the Township to provide curbside rubbish collection in addition to partnering with the Kalamazoo Land Bank, demolishing unsafe building structures, and encourage reutilization.

The office of supervisor generally serves as the township’s chief spokesperson. The authority of the supervisor is limited to that provided by statute or delegated by the township board. The image of the township and its ability to satisfy the needs of its citizens and property owners rests largely on the supervisor’s knowledge of township government and how the township can accomplish these purposes legally, fairly and with the least amount of dissension and friction as possible. The ability to mediate in a rational and logical manner and in the interest of good township development and service is the major goal of the supervisor.

The supervisor assists with the administrative operations for the township and delegates certain statutorily assigned functions to other full-time and/or part-time employees of the township. It is understood that this assignment does not diminish the supervisor’s statutory responsibilities and that these duties may be assumed at the supervisor’s discretion at any time.

The supervisor works with the Township Superintendent on matters related to policy formation, budget oversight, general personnel matters, agenda matters, and committee assignments.

The supervisor is ex officio of all board committees and represents the township at various local, countywide, state or national meetings; except for those delegated to the Superintendent.

Generally, the supervisor is expected to be serving in their official capacity 10 to 20 hours per week during normal business hours.

I was born in Plainwell, Michigan and grew up in Kalamazoo Township. My parents raised me to be honest and respectful, have good values, and always do good things for other people.

I started working at the age of 15 for Kalamazoo Elks Club and continued to work for area business throughout my youth. I started my first business in 1977 in Kalamazoo County and I have been self-employed ever since. My wife Catherine and I met while we were attending Kalamazoo Central High School. After Graduating, Catherine and I were married in 1979 and we went on to have 3 children, Angela, Kevin and Matthew. I worked hard to support my family while Catherine stayed home to raise our children, all which attended and graduated from Comstock Public Schools.

The life of public service has surrounded me since my childhood. My father served in the United States Navy, became a Sergeant for the Kalamazoo City Police Department, and continued serving as a Kalamazoo County Commissioner for 12 years after his retirement in 1973.

In 1977, I joined the Kalamazoo Township Fire Department along with serving on the Board of the Eastwood Fire Association. I quickly climbed the ranks from Lieutenant up to my current position serving as Captain. In addition, I served as an acting lieutenant on the Comstock Fire Department for 19 years.

I joined the Kalamazoo County Sheriff Reserve Division in 1979 and served through 1984. From there, I joined the Kalamazoo Township Police Reserve Division and served for another decade until 1994.

In 2008 to 2012, I was elected to serve on the Comstock Charter Township Board as Trustee while also representing Comstock Township on the Board of Directors for the Kalamazoo Area Building Authority.

In 2009 my wife and I served on the committee for Comstock Daze, a family fun day for the community which all proceeds went to the Great Lakes Burn Camp. A great cause helping children suffering with burns. In 2012, however, Comstock Daze was disbanded, which brought an end to this fundraiser in Comstock. Determined to continue to help the children, in 2012 my wife and I partnered with the Texas Corral to continue fundraising for the Camp. Since 2012, we have hosted the fundraiser annually with several community members at the Kalamazoo County Fairgrounds.

Throughout my life there have been times when things were great and other times I faced challenges. One important thing I have learned is that to never give up and keep pushing forward and success would follow. My lifetime goal has been to provide service to the community. As your Township Supervisor, I will work hard through good times and bad to keep Comstock moving forward in a positive direction.
